What is earlobe surgery?

Earlobe concerns are a common issue and the most common concerns are torn or stretched piercings, earrings that are falling out due to an enlarged hole, scarring resulting from a facelift, or just earlobe elongation or floppiness that can occur with aging. Earlobe surgery offers patients an effective way to restore the appearance of their earlobes or the functionality of their ear piercings.

How does earlobe surgery work?

Earlobe surgery is typically a straightforward process and can be performed under local anesthetic. It typically takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour. For patients with concerns about torn or elongated piercing holes, the surgery involves removing and closing the hole so that it can heal and be repierced in the future. For patients with concerns about floppiness or elongation of the earlobe, the earlobe is shortened to restore a more youthful shape and contour.

If you have experienced any of the following, then earlobe surgery could be what you need to restore your earlobe’s appearance:

  • Elongation or floppiness of the earlobe due to aging
  • Scarring around the earlobe due to a facelift
  • Piercing hole placed in the wrong position
  • Stretched earlobes from heavy earrings
  • Torn earlobe due to an injury

What is the downtime after earlobe surgery?

Earlobe surgery typically requires little to no downtime following your surgery. Mild swelling is normal and there is minimal discomfort after surgery. Patients can return to work within about 1 day, though it will still be important to care for the surgical sites until they are fully healed. Dr. Lee will provide you with a full list of instructions for how to promote optimal healing and see the best outcomes from your procedure. For patients who would like to repierce their ears after surgery, we recommend waiting at least 3 months after surgery before having the ears pierced.

Why do patients prefer an oculofacial plastic surgeon for this surgery?

An oculofacial surgeon highly specialized in working on the structures of the eyes and face. This deep knowledge is essential to create results that look natural, heal optimally, and last. As a board-certified oculofacial plastic surgeon, Dr. Bradford Lee has worked extensively with patients to improve or restore their facial appearance through individualized surgeries and treatments.
